Youth Art Classes:
Spring 2010 Class Schedule
The following youth classes are designed
for students between the ages of 3 and 18. Class sizes are
limited and most fill quickly so register early. If for any
reason a particular class does not fill, you will be notified
and a full refund will be given.
Get
Fired Up (Dynamic Ceramics)
ages 7 - 14
7 week class
Date: Mondays, April 5, 12, 19, (skip 26), May 3, 10, 17, 24
Time: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Instructor: Jen Labie
Cost: $200
Pick up date held after clay is fired - to be announced.
Explore the exciting possibilities of working with clay. You
will learn the basics of hand building and will make several
cool and useful projects such as an animal shaped pinch pot,
and an original slab-built plate, bowl, mug or tray. Your pieces
will be glazed and fired in a kiln. Each piece will be your
own unique design and creation. Seven week class, pieces to
be picked up at a later date after fired.

Enchanted Village
ages 6 - 12

Enter the magical world of faeries, elves, and gnomes. Make
your own fantasy houses or structures to invite these friendly
inhabitants into your garden. Your mini-houses might be made
of natural materials and encrusted with shells, buttons, or
mosaic tiles or made from recycled junk. You can make furniture
and accessories for your houses. Create a family of faeries
and friends out of flexible wire, fabric, silk flowers, etc.
and learn about the many types of forest plants and flowers
that grow in woodland shade. Six week class, reception on seventh
week.
Preschool
Art
ages 3 - 5 with accompanying adult
6 week class
Are you looking for a unique, high quality activity for you
& your child? This class is designed for children to attend
with a participating adult. We will explore art through watercolor,
printmaking, painting, collage, sculpture & much more. Each
class session will have four or five engaging art & craft activities.

Mapping
the World Through Art (Oceana)
Home School Students ages 7 -

Home schooled students will create handmade maps that are geographically
accurate as well as visually appealing. Each map will be a unique
work of art. Students will also be introduced to the art and
culture of the region we are mapping. The spring session will
focus on Oceana. (Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands/Polynesia.)
You will have the opportunity to create several quality pieces
of art inspired by this interesting area of the world. Possibilities
include art inspired by aboriginal paintings from Australia,
wood carvings by New Zealand's Maori, stone petroglyphs and
the mysterious statues of Easter Island.
Creating
Fantasy Creatures
Ages 6 - 12

Learn how to draw fantasy creatures such as, dragons, gargoyles,
griffins, mermaids, faeries, unicorns, etc. or create your own
original creatures. In this class you will work with pencil
as well as pen & ink learning tips to make your drawings look
three-dimensional. You'll learn to pay attention to the details
that will give your creature its own personality. After completing
several drawings you will choose one to finish with watercolors,
then creature a sculpture of your creature with wood pieces
or paper-mache. Six week class, reception on seventh week.

Design (Accessories)

Discover the fun of designing and creating your own fashion
accessories. If you are a budding "fashionista," this is the
class for you. Learn to make a fabulous and functional purse
or handbag. Embellish a pair of shoes. Make unique, one of a
kind, headbands, belts, scarves, jewelry pieces and more. You
will learn hand sewing and embroidery techniques, as well as
have the opportunity to sew on a sewing machine. Pre-requisite:
Must be able to thread a needle and tie a knot without assistance.

Painting

Create bright, bold and beautiful paintings. Learn painting
& color mixing techniques. Use a variety of tools: brushes,
palette knives, sponges, etc. for interesting effects. Paint
several full color paintings on quality artists' paper & one
painting on a large-sized canvas.
Kids
Comedy Club
ages 8-14

Cost: $200
If you are funny, creative and love to perform, we'd like you
to join our Kids Comedy Club. We will try out a variety to styles
of comedy performance including, improv skits, sketch comedy,
mock commercials, and stand up. You will begin by playing on
stage through one of our many drama and theater games. You will
write your own original material to be performed by you as a
solo performer, or as part of a group ensemble. Learn to cultivate
your own funny bone and develop your personal strengths to connect
with the audience. We will present our comedy club show at the
conclusion of this class. Six week class, show on the seventh
week.
Pet
Portraits (Humane Society Benefit)
ages 6 - 13

Cost: $125
Paint pet portraits and participate in a unique fundraising
event in partnership with the Humane Society of Chittenden County.
There will be an art auction at the Humane Society featuring
original art painted by the children in this class. Students
will paint two pet portraits in acrylic on large sized canvases.
You will select one painting to take home and the second painting
will be donated for the auction. (100% of the auction proceeds
will go to support the work done on behalf of the animals at
the Humane Society.) Three week class, reception held at the
humane society in August or September.

Improv (Project "Fun-Way")

Are you a fan of fashion reality t.v.? Would you like to be
surprised each week with a fashion challenge? Join us for this
innovative fashion and sewing class. You will be given a different
assignment each week and have the 2 hour class to complete it
to the best of your ability. You'll learn many fun techniques,
and work with unique materials. Have a blast creating in a supportive
atmosphere without the reality t.v. drama. You'll be amazed
at what you can create. No eliminations as there are only winners
in this exciting class.
"Make
Friends" with Your Sewing Machine (ages 8 - 14)

Learn how to use a sewing machine while making several fun projects.
(You can use one of our machines, or bring in your own). We
will learn sewing machine basics like how to thread the machine,
fill a bobbin, etc. You will also learn to put in a zipper,
make buttonholes, and much more. We will make a variety of projects
while we learn sewing techniques. Our projects will include:
a recycled bag for shopping, a deconstructed t-shirt, a wallet,
and a soft sculpture creature.
Sensational
Skirts
ages 8 - 14

Dates: Friday, April 9, 16, 23 (skip 30) May 7, 14, 21

Cost: $200
In this class you will create your own pattern and learn how
to make a skirt that fits you perfectly. You'll be guided
through putting in a zipper, creating button holes, and making
a professional looking hem. Once you've finished your first
skirt you'll be off and running with creative ideas for additional
skirts. You'll receive many sewing tips, tricks, and techniques
to make your project(s) a smashing and sensational success.
Bring your own sewing machine or use one of ours. We will
have a small selection of fabrics on hand, or you are welcome
to purchase/bring your own fabric. An optional supply list
will be provided upon registration for this class. Six week
class, reception on seventh week.

Techniques
Ages 7 - 14

This class will help you master the basics of realistic drawing.
You will have the opportunity to draw from photos and from life.
Not matter what subject matter you choose you will be able to
practice techniques that will greatly improve your drawing skill
level. Learn to make your drawings look three-dimensional, acquire
shading techniques, learn proportion & perspective skills, and
more. You can focus on what your like to draw: landscapes, still
life, figures & faces, animals, vehicles, etc. Each student
will receive a sketchbook and a pencil set and one of your drawings
will be framed. Six week class, reception on seventh week.
Individualized
Art
ages 12 - 18

Date: Saturdays, April 10, 17, 24 (Skip May 1), May 8, 15, 22
Time: 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Cost: $200
If you are passionate about exploring your art in depth, this
class will provide you with studio time and support. You will
focus on a particular category of art of your choice, select
your materials, and produce several quality pieces. You'll write
an artist's statement and have the opportunity to show your
work in Davis Studio or another public venue. Six week class
(no reception, but invited to display work at Art Hop, in September)
Note: This is an-going class. Students are encouraged
(though not required) to take more than one, six week session
throughout the year in order to develop a body of work.
