Adult and Teen Art Classes and Workshops:
Winter 2012 Class Schedule

The following classes are open to adults, as well as teens, ages 15 and up. Class sizes are limited and most fill quickly so register early. If for any reason a particular class does not fill, you will be notified and a full refund will be given.

Monday

Mixed Media in 2D & 3D
6 week class
Location: 4 Howard Street, Studio One
Dates: Mondays, January 9 (skip 16th) 23, 30, Feb 6, 13, 20
Time: 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Instructor: Teresa Davis
Cost: $200

Learn tricks and tips for using a wide variety of interesting materials to create unique and exciting paintings and sculpture. In this mixed media class you will have the opportunity to explore working with materials such as watercolor, ink, acrylic, pastels, fabric, tissue paper and much more. Find out how to combine materials for surprising and wonderful results in your artwork. We will work on canvas as well as 3-D objects made from wood and paper mache. Explore the amazing mixed media possibilities while completing several finished pieces.

 


Intro to Batik
6 week class
Location: 4 Howard Street, Studio Two
Dates: Mondays, January 16, 23, 30, Feb 6, 13, 20
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Jen Labie
Cost: $200

In this class, we will learn the fundamentals of batik and silk painting. Each student will design, batik and paint a few silk pieces. You will learn various techniques, such as blending, layering, and using salt & sugar. Students will leave this class with all of the skills to continue to use silk as a medium along with completed silk batik projects.

 


Make Friends With Your Sewing Machine
6 week class
Location: 4 Howard Street, Studio One
Dates: Mondays, Feb 6, 13, 20, (skip 27) March 5, 12, 19
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Wylie Garcia
Cost: $200

Learn how to use a sewing machine while making several fun and creative projects. (You can use one of our machines, or bring in your own.) We will learn sewing machine basics like how to thread the machine, fill a bobbin, etc. You will also learn to put in a zipper, make buttonholes and much more. We will make a variety of projects while we learn sewing techniques. Our projects will include: a decorative pillow, an apron, and a table runner. If you have taken this class before, Wylie will introduce you to more advanced projects this time around.

Awaken Creativity
4 week class

Are you ready to move into action on a creative project but are feeling overwhelmed, blocked or unsure? Are you ready to seize new Opportunities or unleash your creative potential? Awaken your creativity in 4 weeks and move from being stuck and overwhelmed to focused, productive, and committed to your creative work. In this interactive class, you will shift yourself to greater clarity and productivity by participating in powerful exercises teaching you how to overcome common obstacles impacting your creative process and work. If you feel stuck or you simply want to awaken more creativity in your life, this class will move you forward. Designed for beginners as well as proficient artists, Awaken your Creativity will get you motivated to create the work, life, and art you really want.

 
 


Mosaic Mirror
3 week class

Mirror, mirror, on the wall - your mirror will be the coolest one of all. Learn how to create beautiful mosaic patterns and how to grout and set your masterpiece. Choose from our collection of glass and ceramic tile, stained glass, pebbles and ephemera to create an unusual mosaic art piece made from recycled materials. We provide materials, but you may want to bring in your costume jewelry or other fun items to add some personalization and sparkle to this one of a kind original art piece.

 


Hand-Painted Whimsical Chairs
3 week class

Dates: Tuesdays, January 10, 17, 24

Turn a plain wooden chair into a whimsical piece of art. Your creation will make a great conversation piece and a fun accent for your home. Using the chair as your canvas you will learn about materials and decorative painting techniques that can be used on any wooden piece of furniture. Bring in a sturdy wooden chair that you already have, (or purchase one for $20 from our selection).

 


Catch the Shutterbug
3 week class

Working with your digital camera, whether or not it is a simple, point and shoot, or a fancy-schmancy DLSR can be overwhelming, or exciting, depending on how much you know about your camera itself. Awaken your inner shutterbug by learning the basics of how to use your digital camera to take visually compelling pictures and begin to create a visual voice of your own. In this class you will learn how to get the most of your camera and will compile an online library of beautiful imagery.

 

Intro to Watercolor
3 week class

Dip into this introductory class to learn what watercolor is about! We will take a playful and exploratory approach that is perfect for beginners. Learn the basics of materials and techniques to begin your watercolor adventure. All materials are provided so we only ask that you bring along your creativity and enthusiasm.

Fused Glass
6 week class
Location: 4 Howard Street, Studio Two
Dates: Wednesdays, January 11, 18, 25, Feb 1, 8, 15

Instructor: Alyssa Oxley

You will be surprised how simple it is to achieve amazing results immediately, working with glass we fire in a kiln. We will learn to cut sheets of glass and explore various techniques to create a number of flat glass projects in addition to draping and slumping into molds to form bowls. Come with your sketches or we will explore ideas here. There will be discussion of design principles, kiln and tool use.

 


Open Studio Painting

If you have always wanted to try painting or if you've painted in the past but you're feeling "rusty" - this is a great class for you. Explore and create in a relaxed environment. Complete beginners are encouraged to attend. Paint with acrylic, water-soluble oil, or watercolor. Select subjects of your choice & receive individualized technique tips, encouragement & support to begin your painting adventure. Up to three canvases as well as all paint and materials are included in the cost of this class.

Creative Journaling
6 week class
Location: 4 Howard Street, Studio One
Dates: Thursdays, January 12, 19, 26, Feb 2, 9, 16
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Learn dozens of creative ways to add visual elements to your written words. You will be guided in combining sketching, painting and writing to create a journal of experiences and personal expressions. Learn drawing skills, how to add decorative borders, creative designs and lettering to your journal, creating a unique and very personal record. You'll be introduced to the use of watercolor pencils, permanent ink pens, college & printmaking techniques to create images and illustrations even if you don't view yourself as a visual "artist." We'll even learn to hand bind our own journals to create a highly visual and descriptive books to treasure for years to come.

Oil Painting
6 week class

Dates: Fridays, January 13, 20, 27, Feb 3, 10, 17

This class is ideal for anyone who wants to begin working in water-soluble oil paint. Learn the basic materials, techniques, and strategies for oil paintings. You will be guided step by step through creating several original oil paintings in subjects of your own choosing. All materials provided.

 


Girls Night Out Art Class
6 week class
Location: 4 Howard Street, Studio One
Dates: Fridays, January 13, 20, 27, Feb 3, 10, 17
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Debbie Carland Purdy
Cost: $200

Need a night out? Want a little more fun in your life? Bring a girlfriend and get creative in this playful class for women. Each evening, your instructor, Debbie, will guide you through an interesting art activity to get your creative juices flowing.

Examples include:
"Her doo is hot" - create a hair-doo inspired collage using materials such as aluminum foil and cellophane to portray the zaniest designer hairdoos.

Another project might be "Dream Weavers," - use tree branches and weaving techniques to create three-dimensional sculptures straight from your wildest dreams.

If you have a sense of adventure and are looking for a community of similarly minded women, this is the class for you. (Participants are welcome to bring a snack or drink to share to enhance the art party atmosphere.)

Individualized Coaching Sessions

Cost: $75.00 for 1.5 hours of coaching


A few of our instructors are available for art coaching sessions. If you are an adult or teen student looking for some individualized coaching to help you move forward with your personal art practice or budding art career, we would like to offer support. We will customize our coaching sessions per your request.

We can assist with topics such as:
  • Developing an artist statement, bio & cv/resume
  • Organizing your studio and yourself
  • Designing a plan of action
  • Feedback/Critique on your art work
  • Polishing your portfolio
  • Keys to approaching a restaurant or gallery to show work
  • Tips for increasing art sales
  • Promoting yourself as an artist
