Kids Art Classes: Fall 2011
Registration
is now closed for these classes, the following are listed
so you can get a feel for what we offer. Be sure to sign
up for our newsletter (up there in the top right corner
of the page) to find out when registration opens each season.
Mondays
Note: Pick up date held after clay is fired: to be announced.
Fashion your wildest dreams from a single lump of clay.
You will create your own interesting creatures, whether
they be dragons, fantasy fish or flying pigs. You will learn
pinch, and slab methods of hand building along with several
texturing techniques. Produce several original and exciting
pieces. Examples include, sculptures, bowls and tiles featuring
your fantasy creatures. You might also consider creating
a shelter or habitat for your creature. All pieces will
be fired in our kiln and then you'll glaze them for a professional
finish.
Learn how to use a sewing machine while making several fun
projects. (You can use one of our machines, or bring in
your own.) We will learn sewing machine basics like how
to thread the machine, fill a bobbin, etc. You will also
learn to put in a zipper, make buttonholes and much more.
We will make a variety of projects while we learn sewing
techniques. Our projects will include: a shopping bag made
from recycled clothing, a deconstructed t-shirt, a wallet
and a soft sculpture creature. If you have taken this class
before, Wylie will introduce you to more advanced projects
this time around.
Create interesting ceramic forms with liquid clay using
a slipcasting method. In this class we'll work on designing
and creating a cast object. We'll make plans, create a plaster
mould, pour slip into the mould, and open the mould up to
discover what we surprising shape we get. We'll also cover
different finishing techniques - adding onto your object,
carving bits away, adding glazes, etc. Cast forms will be
fired and picked up after the last class has finished.
Taking our inspiration from the amazing work of Vincent
Van Gogh you will learn drawing techniques and paint two
or three acrylic paintings on canvas. (Choose subjects such
as a Landscape, Flower, Still Life, Portrait, or Building).
Learn about color mixing and try out Vincent's unique pallet
of colors. Learn "hatching" to add tremendous
texture to your work. Along the way we will learn many facts
about the interesting life of Vincent Van Gogh.
Tuesdays
Fans of the Rick Riordan's books can join us for a weekly
visit to "Camp Half-Blood" where we will expand
our knowledge of the Greek Gods, Percy Jackson style. Go
on a daily quest, and work together to create an action
packed and humorous skit that you write yourselves. In addition
we will explore the rich art and culture of ancient Greece.
Create a story vase, as well as a three-dimensional sculpture
inspired by your chosen god or hero. For our final project,
choose from a comic book, chapter book or board game highlighting
your own mythology inspired adventure.
Learn designer tips and tricks to create your own fabulous
fashions. You will learn how to customize your wardrobe by
adding interesting details and embellishments to basic articles
of clothing to make them stylish, one of a kind art pieces.
Learn various techniques such as printing, appliquéing,
embroidering and more to create fun and fantastic accents.
Feel free bring in your own jeans, shirts and skirts if you'd
like or choose fun pieces from our studio stash. We will also
provide plenty of materials for custom t-shirts, cool purses,
and other fun accessories. After this class you'll be on your
way as a fashion designer.
Preschool Art (Tuesdays & Wednesdays)
Looking for a unique, high quality activity for you and
your child? This class is designed for children to attend
with a participating adult. We will explore art through
watercolor, printmaking, acrylic painting, collage, sculpture
and much more. Each class session will have four or five
engaging art and craft activities. Adults are welcome and
encouraged to make their own art along with their preschooler.
Wednesdays
This exciting writing class will be infused with playful
exercises, writing games and artistic embellishments that
will rev up the most reluctant writer. Kids who already
love to write will really get their creative juices flowing.
We will explore innovative fiction-based writing activities
such as jokes, short plays, crazy character sketches, letters
to cartoon characters, visual poems, graphic short stories,
restaurant reviews, history mysteries, lucky lists and much
more. Each student will compile their favorite pieces, and
then add illustrations and artistic flair to create a collection
of lusciously layered fictional writing. Students will be
able to practice editing and revising and will receive encouragement,
guidance & support. Each individual collection will
be hand bound in a beautiful self-published book. Once you
start writing in this playful way you may not be able to
stop.
You will be surprised at how simple it is to achieve stunning
results working with glass that is fired in a kiln. An amazing
variety of creations will be produced in this unique class.
We will consider the elements of design (line, shape, color,
value, texture, form & space) while learning to cut
and assemble pieces of colored glass. Create tiles, mirrors,
& panels. Then learn techniques for draping and slumping
into molds to create bowls and 3-dimensional pieces. No
previous experience necessary.
Create bright, bold and beautiful paintings. Learn painting
& color mixing techniques. Use a variety of tools: brushes,
palette knives, sponges, etc. for interesting effects. Paint
several fullcolor paintings on quality artists' paper &
two paintings on canvas. Students choose their own subject
matter for each painting.
Did you ever want to join a band? How
about learning to make your own instruments? Using stuff you
could find either around the house or at the hardware store
(or sometimes out in the street), we'll explore concepts of
sound, rhythm, and pitch. You will experiment with a variety
of materials that make terrific sounds. We'll focus on some
of the key concepts of instrument making, and the final project
will be an instrument you design yourself! We will take our
inspiration from instruments from around the world such as
the South American rainstick, the Australian didgeridoo and
the guitar.
Thursdays
Would you like to learn to draw more realistically? This
class will help you master the basics. You will have the
opportunity to draw from photos and from life as well as
from your imagination. No matter what subject matter you
choose you willbe able to practice techniques that will
greatly improve your drawing skill level. Learn to make
your drawings look three-dimensional, acquire shading techniques,
learn proportion & perspective skills, and much more.
"Washi" is a Japanese term generally used to describe
paper made by hand. In this innovative class you will not
only create your own handmade papers, but you will learn the
many wonders paper has to offer as an exceptional art medium.
You will create gorgeous handmade papers using paper pulp
infused with colored tissue, glitter, and dried plant material.
You will also try out a marbling technique using plain white
paper. Then learn the impressive art of paper folding and
three-dimensional paper sculpture. In addition, you will learn
the magical secrets of making your own pop up cards and books.
By the end of this class you will have created an entire wild
and wacky wicky-washi wonderland of fun.
Fridays
Create movies where Lego blocks, toys and other objects appear
to move and "build" themselves. Learn to use computer
software to create stop-action, animated mini-movies. If you
can imagine it moving, you can animate it. Learn to add music
or sound effects to your movie. Final movies will be placed
on youtube to share with family and friends.
What better way to spend your time than
by making toys? Take your creative ideas from concept to
reality. Fill a sketchbook with drawings of your ideas for
toys you design yourself and then get the chance to bring
some of them to "life." In this class we will
support you in making several fun toys that you and your
friends will want to play with again and again.
Saturdays
Immerse yourself in the rich culture of India and create a
wonderful array of art inspired by this amazing country. Make
a Rangoli design with colored sand on tile. Learn the process
of Batik and make your own pillow cover. Use ink on paper
to make henna inspired designs, and paint with acrylic on
canvas to make a colorful Ragamala painting.
Work with papier mache to create sculptures of people and
animals inspired by the Hindu gods. Enjoy delicious Indian
food and music at our reception!
Countdown ‘til Christmas! Create a magical gift to mail
out early, or surprise your own family with this handmade
treasure. Think winter forests, wildlife, Vermont villages,
snowmen, festive holiday living rooms-whatever you dream
up! Advent calendars started in Europe centuries ago, and
each week we’ll complete a different step: planning, drawing,
cutting, and “sandwiching” two layers (the cover and the
small windows). Glitter can be a finishing touch. As another
option, there will be ready-made black and white line drawings
available for coloring. The instructor, Local illustrator
Kate Lanxner, taught this class most recently in Geneva,
Switzerland and has marketed her original calendars for
the past seven years.
